Switching from Guitar to Bass, any advice?
Alright so i have been playing an acoustic guitar for almost 3 months and i actually never wanted to be a guitarist, my dad wanted me to, i really wanted to be a bassist. Its not that i dont like guitar, just that i love everything about bass! A few questions though….
Is it hard to switch from guitar to bass?
Some people say its boring to play bass, is it really?
These are my choices for possible basses, mind you i have a budget http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-by-Fender-Standard-Jazz-Bass-512733-i1166295.gc or http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-GSR200FM-4-String-Bass-Guitar-103036489-i1148510.gc or http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-by-Fender-Standard-Jazz-Bass-102581394-i1146516.gc
last one is optional to answer, i just want to know if there is anything i should look out for with buying one of these, the first one is number 1 in line for me.
1. Good for you, often it’s hard to find a bassist, and as a bassist, I’m bombarded by requests to be in people’s bands.
2. No, it’s really not that hard, you can even use a pick on bass if you want, even though people say you should only use your fingers. No, it’s not boring, though it can be, depending on what you play. Playing funk, or some more bass-oriented metal is not boring at all. Try listening to Primus, or Tool.
3. I always make it a point to recommend the Ibanez over the Squiers, but good choice with the Squiers. Any of them are good for starters, but I still recommend the Ibanez, that way you can play it for a long time, rather than having to upgrade to a Fender from the Squier later.
4. With Squiers, you have to look out for crappy input jacks and pickups, and the action (distance from strings to fretboard) will be high when you get it. You can use the little L shaped keys you get with it (the small one, not the big one) to fix that though. With the Ibanez, look out for plastic nuts and stripped input jacks. Also, occasionally the tuners will fall out.
