Legends Of Flamenco Guitar Music
Logically, these new guitar innovators, are stimulated by and build on, the legacies of those who have gone before. The most important and influential in modern times was Ramon Montoya. Although he is best regarded as the Uncle of the trail-blazing Flamenco guitar player Carlos Montoya, it was, in point of fact, Ramon who did the “trail blazing” and Carlos who followed. substantial one.
Expanding Flamenco guitar music from it’s strictly accompanying role, to a foreground one. Carlos then proceeded to bring to a wider attention authentic Flamenco music by virtually consistent world touring in the 20′s through the 50′s. Introducing also Jazz, Folk, Blues and Classical styles into his classic Flamenco.
The “Flamenco torch” was then passed to the brilliant Paco de Lucia. Who, like Ramon and Carlos Montoya, first began his professional career accompanying Flamenco dancers and singers. As a result, Paco evolved, and keeps expanding a career as a Flamenco innovator. Both alone and with his group. And, like Carlos, Paco’s creations reflect his engagement in a wide variety of musical trends.
Motivated by, and building on the accomplishments of the Montoyas’ and Paco, today’s Spanish guitar heroes are blazing new musical borders, yet again with their compositions.The technically stunning, but always soulful Lawson Rollins. Originally fromNorth Carolina, now leaving his heart in San Francisco. The Chilean born Oscar Lopez, now hanging his hat in Canada. Thrilling audiences with his rhythm and musical passion. For some reason, possibly just coincidence, Canada seems to be a magnet for the new generation of Flamenco innovators. Because in addition to Oscar Lopez, it is in Toronto that the Trinidadian native flamenco superstar Miguel de la Bastide is based. Yet another “Canadian Connection” is Guitarist Jesse Cook. Born in Paris to Canadian parents, presently , like his other Canadian “musical brothers” living in in Canada, Jesse spent his formative years in the Camargue region of France. Where he was inspired by the local gypsy music. Principally that of guitarist Manitas de Plata, (his next door neighbour) and Nicholas Reyes lead singer of the Gypsy Kings.
Of all the modern Spanish guitar heroes, perhaps the one who most perfectly incorporates elements of all the genres of the other guitarists mentioned, is Santiago Cortez. One is instantaneously struck by both the quality and the variety of his compositions. He is a purist. In the sense that each idiom, each influence, is respected and honored in the framework of the composition. His faultless technique and original gift for melody, at all times letting it lead the listener’s ear, assures a distinctive musical experience every time. While Santiago’s New flamenco guitar music is available and recognizable, it is never derivative. His blend of musical styles and influences is flawless and unconscious. The indisputable evidence of a specialist at the top of his game.
