classical guitar building
Could you put steel strings on a classical guitar, but using a lower tuning, such as C?
It’s for a really REALLY cheap guitar…. I’ve seen it before (it’s what people here in Romania buy for children just to shut them up when they ask for a guitar)….. it’s got the build of a classical, but I’ve seen it with steel strings before…. what I’m saying is “would light gauge steel strings, in a low tuning, fit?”
Some nylon strings attach differently than steel. Even if you managed to attach the steel strings, it wouldn’t work. When you tuned the steel stings to a low enough tension to not harm the classical guitar, they’d just flop around.

Spanish Guitar Music
“Flamenco” is the name most often associated with spanish flamenco guitar music And although it is definitely part of that country’s culture, it’s native only to the Southern region of Andalucia. However this does’nt mean that if you’re not born in Andalucia, you can’t be a “legitimate” Flamenco artist! There have been, and continue to be, many contributors from other regions and other countries. especially Latin America and Cuba.
Originally, Flamenco was the music of the Andalucian gypsies. And, naturally those who grew up around them were called “Flamencos.”
Just as this genre of spanish guitar was the culmination of centuries of influence and “cross pollination” by and from Byzantine and Moorish influences, the same is true for the developement of the Spanish Guitar.
Cross Pollination
Following the Islamic invasion of Spain in 711, the region of what we today call Cordoba, became a center for Islamic musicians. Who were unquestionably influenced by the local music. The initial phase of the guitars’ evolution was the addition of a fifth string to the Islamic Oud. The resulting instrument was the Andalucian “Nuba.” More commonly referred to as the “Moorish Guitar.”
Centuries later, features of this instrument mixed with the European Lute and the Guitar Latina created the Vihuela. This became the basis for the Baroque guitar, which, in turn, transformed into the Classical guitar. Finally, the Flamenco guitar was born. A variation of it’s Classical “cousin.”
A Quantum Leap
Although it’s always difficult to say precisely when a particular style or form of music “first began” – it’s safe to say that that the emergence of Carlos Montoya was a an extremely important benchmark. Montoya, a gypsy, who could’nt read or write music, began playing in cafes when he was only 14 years old. In that era, the guitar was regarded simply as an accompanying instrument. It was Montoya’s musical gifts, both as a performer and a composer that would lift the guitar, and it’s music to foreground status.
Durng the 20′s and 30′s Montoya toured the World, often accompanying famous dancers, such as La Argentina. After the Second World War, now based in New York, Montoya continued to fill concert halls(including the Houston Astrodome!)Expanding his repertoire(and that of new Spanish Flamenco Music) to incorporate jazz, folk and blues.
Passing the Torch
Montoya’s achievements paved the way for all future Flamenco guitarists. The most celebrated modern one being, of course, Paco de Lucia. Like, Montoya, Paco also started his professional career at an early age, and also by accompanying dancers and singers. His first important professional accomplishment was accompanying the legendaryFlamenco singer Carmen De La Istra for eight years. Paco continues to donate to the developement of Spanish music with his concerts and compositions which, like Montoya, freely mix jazz, pop, rock, folk, blues and classical motifs.
The Modern Scene
Today, it is Paco, the inheritor to Montoya’s tradition, who is the inspiration and reference for the current generation of Spanish Flamenco guitarists.Jesse Cook, the spirited Canadian. Oscar Lopez. Lawson Rollins. Miguel de La Bastide. Jose Encinas. And, certainly, Santiago Cortez.
Like Paco, Santiago effortlessly combines the music of several cultures and traditions, in a style that is always accessible, but never derivative. His two great strong points are the quality of his compositions, and his exceptional gift for melody. Santiago’s formidable technique is always complimenting, never overpowering it. This is what makes his brand of spanish flamenco guitar so unique and listenable.
