Problem with my guitar?
I own a classical guitar and just started learning how to play it. After a lot of research, I restrung the guitar on my own. But I tuned it too hard, and forced the knob/button on the machine head too much and it got detached. So now I’ve got the plastic white knob here in my hand, while the rest of the machine head (aka tuner, gear head, tuning machine) is intact. Only the plastic thingy is missing on the machine head.
What should I do now? Buy an entire set of machine heads? Or is it possible to only buy the plastic knob that comes with it? I tried reattaching it with superglue, doesn’t work.. Thanks for you help!
PS: sorry if this question’s in the wrong section.
A Machine Head is the entire assembly that attaches to the String Roller Sleeve, inclusive of the “plastic thingee” that broke on your guitar. That thingee is called a “button” or a “knob”. I cant think of anytime I’ve ever seen buttons for sale by themselves. It’s even hard to find just one individual machine head assembly for sale. If I were you I would do one of two things:
1. If it’s a cheap guitar, get an affordably priced set of machine heads that don’t include the rollers and sleeves. Here is a good example: http://www.suntekstore.com/classical-guitar-tuning-keys-pegs-machine-heads-tuner.html
2. If it’s a good guitar, use the oppty to get some quality tuners that include the entire roller assembly. This will be a significant upgrade and will make your guitar play much better. Here is a good example: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_slotted_peghead_tuners/Gotoh_Classical_Guitar_Tuners.html
edit: I may have read Tom’s answer incorrectly, but do not put steel strings on your classical guitar. The neck is designed and trussed for the tension generated by nylon strings in comparison to its size. If you put steel on there, you’d have to make adjustments to it or you’ll have a warped neck.
