Can you play Flamenco music on a regular acoustic guitar?

My boyfriend is really into Spanish style music and I’d like to get him an instructional book of Flamenco style music but he only owns a classic standard acoustic guitar. Is this a huge problem for him to learn to play Flamenco style on his current guitar? He has talked about buying a “Spanish” guitar but I don’t know much about the difference in them.

You say he owns a “classic standard acoustic guitar”. I’m not sure what kind of guitar you’re talking about so I decided to include links to pictures.

This one is a regular classical guitar :

If he owns something like this then there will be no problem for him to play flamenco on it.
Well Guitars specifically made for flamenco have subtle difference from classical guitars. However these differences aren’t that much and he certainly can play flamenco on a classic guitar. Many flamenco guitars have a “Golpeador” on their body to protect the guitar from “golpe” strikes. But that’s not very important. He can even attach a golpeador to his classic guitar if he wants to.

Here’s a photo of a flamenco guitar and as you can see it looks very similar to a classical guitar :

This is an acoustic guitar. Well technically any instrument that’s not electrically amplified is an acoustic one, but usually the term acoustic guitar is used for steel-string guitars that are used in music genres such as blues, country, folk, rock etc

And no, you can’t play flamenco with these guitars really. The string tension, action and the quality of the strings are very different than those of a flamenco guitar.
