vintage gibson bass guitars
Problem with my guitar style in band, HELP?
Ok, so i am in a band right now that for the past couple months has been playing original songs in the vein of Green Day and Blink 182, but now the band wants to change the style to more of a All Time Low and There For Tomorrow style, which I was cool with. But then the singer and the bass player in my band want to me to change my style to a more “poppy” style to fit the changes in the band. So to do this, i bought a 1957 Gibson Vintage pickup to change to this sound, but they didn’t like this. Then they started to tell me to play “lower on the neck” and “play barre chords” instead of my usual riffs and power chords, even though neither of them are guitar players. Now i feel like i can’t get my ideas, and even though i like this band, i feel sort of repressed in my playing. I was wondering if any guitar players here had any suggestions?
P.S- Here is the link to our youtube, just so you guys could get a taste of the music: www.youtube.com/valentinessoldier
First of all, those ’57 PAF pickups are awesome. If your band doesn’t like the way that you are doing things, it’s kind of their problem. They can be a bit more open minded and try to make it to where everyone has a say in the music, or they can look for another guitarist. The free time you have while not playing with them will help you develop your own style that other serious musicians will appreciate. It’s a crappy situation and one I have been in before. However, I play my guitar for me and nobody else. I’ll never be famous or rich and I sure as hell ain’t in it for the popularity or chicks. Do whatever feels right to you. It’s nobody’s decision to make for you.
